Hotel Lifehacks

Use it as a tactical aid in your Newfoundland ferry voyage. Reserve an evening’s stay for the night before an early morning departure. All of the above gets rid of the hassle of a long, early-morning drive to the terminal. You can wake at a decent hour, get a coffee from the Tim Hortons adjacent (walking distance), and in under 5 minutes, be at the ferry check-in line. The best, most convenient way to kick off the next leg of your adventure, and that’s what the motel excels in.

To make your stay more comfortable and more friendly to your budget, we won’t have an on-site restaurant at the motel. But here’s a great hack: it’s a three-minute drive from Sobeys in North Sydney. Rooms are clean with ample space for spreading out to prepare a simple, no-cook meal or snacks. Much better on the pocket than the limited fast-food outlets and a great help if you’re stocking a cooler for the long ferry crossing.

While the motel is indeed the ideal stopover, it is also very inexpensive as a home base for exploring the surrounding area. Take the accommodation money you have saved and put it into exploring Cape Breton. It’s a great place to begin or end while traveling the famous Cabot Trail. Alternatively, you may drive the 20 minutes into nearby Sydney and visit the historic waterfront, enjoy fine dining, and see the largest fiddle in the world, "Fidheal Mòr A' Ceilidh."

Accept the motel for what it really is – the clean, safe, friendly, and perfectly functional place to sleep. It’s not a modern, assembly-line chain hotel, but an actual “time capsule” of a classic 1960s/70s roadside motel. If you’re bothered by the dingy decor, don’t even look down the hallway to your room reservation. Embrace its cleanliness and the warm yet authentic hospitality of the mom-and-pop owners. So don’t expect the world from this place; it’s clean, safe, friendly, and someplace you can lay your head down-that’s functionality to most travelers. Please place me in a room toward the rear of your premises as far away from any possible traffic noise as possible since I am a very light sleeper.
