Jacques Cartier Motel is located on one of the town’s main commercial strips, a rather driver-friendly spot in North Sydney. Not that it’s a completely stranded location, for a guest has just about everything within a 5 to 10-minute walk to meet his practical, and rather urgent, requirements. There are fast-food chains, and – most crucial for any Canadian on a road trip – a Tim Hortons at which one can grab a quick, dependable breakfast and coffee in the morning before driving off or boarding the ferry. There's also a gas station and general store in case one runs out of last-minute supplies, snacks, or drinks.

The small shops and local restaurants of North Sydney can be found in the main ‘downtown’ area of North Sydney- slightly farther on foot. About 20-25 minutes walking (or a very short 3 minutes in the car) will have you at the main waterfront spot where stands a service and an amenity ideal Sobeys grocery store (great for stocking up before the long ferry ride), a pharmacy, and a Black spoons highly-rated local eateries like The Commercial Street Deli. This walk is perfectly pleasant, although most visitors prefer to travel in their own vehicle, which the motel is ideally set up for.

The Marine Atlantic ferry terminal which from this inn many visitors stay is around 2-3 kilometers away. Though technically feasible for a committed backpacker with minimal baggage, it is simply not convenient for the great majority of travelers. Thus, walkability of the motor inn is best understood as functional: to walk over and pick up a meal or coffee. To visit any other places of interest or towards traveling e.g. to the main city of Sydney just 20 minutes’ drive or starting point of Cabot Trail – a car is a must.
